Gum surgery doesn't have to be stressful, especially when you know how to take care of yourself afterwards and promote the healing process. Today we have tips and answers on what to do and eat after surgery to help your gums heal properly.

How Long Does Gum Surgery Recovery Take?

Healing after gum surgery in North York takes about two to three weeks to recover fully, with the first few days following the procedure being the most critical time. Following the tips for eating and caring for yourself after your gum surgery will be essential to ensure a smooth recovery.

What to Do Immediately After Surgery

It's normal to experience pain, tenderness, and general discomfort in the first few days after your surgery. You can manage pain with prescribed medication as needed or over-the-counter options like Ibuprofen every four hours.

Avoid rinsing your mouth until at least 24 hours after surgery. Then you can soothe the treated areas with warm salt water rinses, using a teaspoon of salt mixed in an eight-ounce glass of warm water.

Sticking to soft or liquid foods for the first few days is advisable. Here are some ideas:

  • Soup at room temperature
  • Applesauce
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies or shakes

You may also want to blend solid items for the first few days to prevent irritating your surgical sites. Be sure to immediately contact your North York dentist at (437) 900-8266 if you notice excessive bleeding or have discomfort that does not dissipate over time.

Other Helpful Healing Tips to Keep in Mind

It's a good idea to let your body rest after surgery by taking some time off from your normal activities. It's also wise to avoid strenuous activities or vigorous exercise during the first week of healing.

When you can manage your pain and take good care of yourself during your healing process, you'll find yourself smiling again in no time!
