TMJ is really an acronym for the temporomandibular joint—the hinge-like construction that connects your jaw to your skull. However, TMJ is often used to describe disorders of this joint as opposed to the joint itself. It may also be referenced as a temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD.

If you have TMJ, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • Clicking sound in the joint
  • Jaw locking or popping
  • Painful yawning and chewing
  • Head, neck, and shoulder pain

If your TMJ is related to a condition called bruxism (teeth grinding), you may also notice a bulky appearance around the lower face, tooth wear, jaw pain, and dental fractures.

Our dental office offers appliance therapy and BOTOX® to help treat TMJ and bruxism. The appliance fits over the teeth and prevents nocturnal grinding. BOTOX relaxes the muscles around the TMJ, allowing them time to heal.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a disorder that impacts your jaw joint (TMJ). If you suffer from TMD, you may notice these symptoms:

  • Pain and tenderness when chewing and eating
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Frequent headaches
  • Jaw locking open or closed
  • Popping or clicking of the jaw joint
  • Clenching or grinding (bruxism)

If you suffer from multiple symptoms, it can be quite debilitating and significantly impact your quality of life. Left untreated, TMD can result in more discomfort and degeneration of the jaw joint.

You may also experience tooth wear or damage if bruxism is causing your TMD.

How Do We Treat TMD?

At Emery Village Dental, we take time to determine the root cause of your problem before we suggest TMJ treatment.

For example, if bruxism is causing your TMD, our dentists may recommend a nightguard for you to wear during sleep, which protects your teeth from the damage and wear that bruxism causes.

The most effective way to identify suitable treatment for your TMD is to arrange an evaluation with one of our experienced dentists. They will work closely with you to pinpoint the root cause of your discomfort and guide you toward the most effective treatment plan.

If you're ready to take the first step towards relieving your TMD symptoms, book an evaluation with your North York dentist at (437) 900-8266. They will provide you with more information on how we can help you manage your TMD effectively.

What Causes TMD?

The cause of TMD varies greatly for each patient, and determining the root cause of the disorder is an integral key in effectively treating it.

Some of the causes of TMD might be one or a combination of these things:

  • Trauma or injury to your jaw
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism)
  • Tooth or bite misalignment

Your North York dentist takes the time to pinpoint the cause of your TMD so we can recommend the most effective treatment plan for you.

How Do We Treat TMD?

mouth guard to help treat TMD issues in north yorkDepending on the cause of your disorder, there are several treatment options your dentist may recommend.

For example, if clenching and grinding your teeth at night is the primary cause of your TMD, your dentist might recommend a customized night guard that you can wear while you sleep. A night guard fits over your teeth much like an orthodontic retainer and protects them from the excessive wear and damage that bruxism can cause.

If tooth misalignment is the cause of your jaw joint pain, your dentist may recommend orthodontic treatment as a solution for your TMD. At Emery Village Dental, we offer comprehensive orthodontic options with traditional braces and Invisalign that you can complete right here in our North York dental office.
