How Can Sedation Dentistry Help Me?

Does the thought of sitting in the dental chair make you want to bolt? You’re not alone! Sedation dentistry in North York, ON, is a great way to experience stress-free dental care. Why do so many patients love it? Here are three benefits.

Alleviates Anxiety

With sedation, you’ll feel calm, relaxed, and ready to tackle even the most complex dental treatments. It’s like taking a spa day for your teeth.

Quicker Appointments

Long appointments feel like a breeze under sedation at our dental office. Most patients barely notice the time passing.

Helps with Gag Reflex

If your gag reflex has a mind of its own, sedation can help. It keeps you relaxed so your dentist can work efficiently without any extra hiccups.

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer several types of dental sedation that can help you relax and feel at ease in the dental chair, whether you're having your teeth cleaned or a tooth replaced.

Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation

The mildest form of dental sedation we offer is nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, which you inhale through a mask worn during your procedure. Nitrous oxide helps you relax quickly, and then it leaves your system quickly once we remove your mask.

IV Sedation for Dental Anxiety

IV sedation provides a level of relaxation that is similar to sleeping through your dental procedures. Dr. Joo delivers medication intravenously while monitoring your vitals and heart rate. IV sedation may be helpful for patients with special needs or severe anxiety.

Dental sedation is also ideal for patients with special needs, physical or mental disabilities, bad gag reflexes, extensive treatment needs, severe dental phobia, and difficulties sitting for long periods.

Sedation Dentistry in North York

At Emery Village Dental, we are happy to offer three levels of sedation to help anxious patients get the dental care they need.

  • Nitrous Oxide—A lighter option that helps take the edge off without leaving you with lingering side effects.
  • IV Sedation—The deepest level of sedation we offer that allows you to completely relax and feel like you're sleeping through your procedure.

If you're interested in using dental sedation for treatment procedures, our dentists can help determine which option would be the best for your needs.

When choosing IV sedation, you'll need transportation arranged to and from your appointment, and you'll need to plan on resting afterward. Taking time off from work with these options is a good idea.

At Emery Village Dental, we offer several levels of sedation for your comfort. We often hear questions about sedation dentistry, like "How long does it take for the effects of dental sedation to wear off?" or "Will I need someone to accompany me home after my appointment?"

Today we will review the different types of dental sedation in North York that we offer, and what you can expect.

Nitrous Oxide in North York

Nitrous oxide is one of the lightest levels of sedation that we can use with most types of procedures.

It's delivered through a mask you wear during your procedure; it's a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. When we remove the mask after you complete your procedure, the nitrous leaves your system without any lingering side effects.

IV Sedation

This is the deepest level of sedation we offer. Medication is delivered intravenously and adjusted as needed throughout your procedure while we monitor your heart rate and vital signs continually.

This type of sedation is ideal for those with severe dental phobias, a lot of procedures to complete at once, or special needs.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) in North York

Nitrous oxide is the lowest level of dental sedation that many patients discover is enough to help them feel at ease in the dental chair. Nitrous oxide and oxygen combine to help you relax as you comfortably breathe the gases in through a mask worn during your procedure.

Even better, nitrous oxide leaves your body as soon as you remove the mask after your procedure. This means that you’ll be able to drive yourself and return to your normal activities after your dental appointment.
